The game takes place in 1974, 10 years after the events of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, and 4 years after Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops, in Latin America. In the Republic of Costa Rica in an atmosphere of deep secrecy planted whole trade secret army - the mysterious armed forces with modern weapons at the time. The government, since 1949 has renounced its own army, unable to prevent the invasion, but may not apply to the more powerful neighbors - it means a loss of independence. Instead, Costa Rica secretly hires a legendary commander Neyked Snake and his militia Militaires Sans Frontieres, to those without fanfare, have investigated the invasion.
